Eurasia Foundation's First Annual Dinner Marks 18 Years of Regional Cooperation

From Capitol Hill to Moscow, politicians, ambassadors, advocates and corporate executives came together in full force on January 12 to join Eurasia Foundation in celebration of the organization’s eighteen years of success in the region. Under the theme, “Celebrating Ordinary People and Extraordinary Achievements throughout Eurasia,” the event drew more than 240 individuals, including Ambassadors from Russia, Kazakhstan and Sweden and four other countries participating in Eurasia Foundation’s work. Eurasia Foundation Establishes New Partner in Moldova
East Europe Foundation in Moldova will continue Eurasia Foundation’s rich legacy of promoting democracy and the growth of a market economy in Moldova. With the establishment of East Europe Foundation, EF will transfer ownership of strategy, finances and programs to local staff, based on the EF model of success.

Civil Society Becomes Government's Partner
A National Participation Council composed of representatives of 30 NGOs working in different areas was created under the Government of Moldova. The first meeting of the Council held on February 2 was chaired by Prime Minister Vlad Filat, Info-Prim Neo reports. The meeting elected the administration of the National Participation Council with Sorin Mereacre, executive director of Eurasia Foundation in Moldova, as chairman of the Council

Municipal Partnerships for Better Energy Use
Local government officials and regional stakeholders met January 29th to discuss EEF’s project Municipal Partnerships for Better Energy Use in the Carpathian mountainous regions of Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpatska oblasts.  The project will support the work of local governments and communities to assess the feasibility of alternative energy use, including solar and wind power. The purpose of the meeting was to further discuss the project goals and objectives in detail with regional government leaders and further engage them in the direction and deliverables of the project.

Eurasia Foundation Event Draws Fortune 100 Sponsors
Eurasia Foundation's fundraising dinner in January 2010, which was the first of its kind for the organization, was generously sponsored by Eurasia Foundation Trustee Drew Guff of Sigular Guff. Community Schools in Russia: A New Generation
 
 
The first seminar for representatives of institutions of higher learning and continuous education was held in the Moscow region on December 15 – 18, 2009 within the framework of the project “Community schools in Russia: a new generation." The seminar is part of a large program of training for school instructors who will design training courses, modules, and qualifications improvement programs for education specialists on the basis of the community school model.

Tolerance Building in Armenian Youth Banks
EPF, which receives funding from USAID through Eurasia Foundation, launched the Youth Bank in Georgia in October 2007. The Program offers small groups of young people modest funding to engage as active citizens in the development of their communities. In response to the 2008 conflict between Russia and Georgia, which deepened inter-community tensions in areas with high ethnic diversity, EPF formed an additional four YB committees, focusing on youth living along the borders with other South Caucasus countries. East Europe Foundation and Telenor Group Create Community Centers for the Ederly
East Europe Foundation and telecommunications company Telenor Group in Ukraine provided 296,497 Ukraine Hryvnia (approximately $37,000) to organizations in Poltava and Sumy oblasts to establish three community centers for elderly citizens in Pyryatyn, Nedrygayliv and Lypova Dolyna. Centers will become venues for seniors’ pastime activities, where they can gather to sing, dance, perform, and spend time with each other during afternoon tea, as well as gain new skills like photography or personal computer usage.   • On October 10, 2009, the Agreement  on diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey was signed in Zurich. Now, more than 15 years after Turkey closed its border to Armenia, the two states appear ready to move beyond their differences. This rapprochement, the most significant positive event in the region since 1994, could prove to be a milestone in the relations between the two neighboring states and a major factor impacting positively on the stability of the entire Caucasus region.
