New Eurasia Foundation Addresses Employment Problems in Russian Company Towns
On January 22, the New Eurasia Foundation (FNE) organized a round table on Employment Problems in Russian Company Towns: The Challenge of the New Economic Situation. Co-organized by the Institute of Contemporary Development and Siberian Coal and Energy Company OJSC, the goal of the session was to discuss possible methods of addressing social problems in company towns, i.e. towns in which the town-forming enterprise acts as the only local employer. Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia Establishes Resource Center for the Blind in the Fergana Valley
In the Fergana Valley, the bordering regions of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, there are more than 45,500 blind or visually impaired people, of which 25 percent are children and youth. Due to the high cost, there is not even a single Braille printing machine in Kyrgyzstan. Consequently, the visually impaired lack access to the information and education necessary to actively participate in the social, economic and political life of their communities. Read more...

Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia Promotes Social Partnerships in Kazakhstan
In January, the Foundation of Local Communities of the Enbekshikazakh District organized a forum for local entrepreneurs on developing social partnerships. The Foundation is a grant recipient and primary partner of the Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia (EFCA) in its Development of Local Communities program. The main goal of the forum was to provide a platform for dialogue and an exchange of ideas among representatives of business, local government agencies and society on building and developing social partnerships in the region. New Eurasia Establishment Provides Training to Legal Clinicians in Belarus
In December, Viciebsk State University hosted a seminar for legal students on client interviewing and consulting techniques as a part of New Eurasia Establishment's (NEE) Legal Clinics Development program. Eight students and eight coordinators from the Polack State University legal clinic joined their Viciebsk peers at the event to enhance their professional capacities and share best practices in providing legal assistance to vulnerable groups. Eurasia Foundation Facilitates the Creation of an Audit Bureau of Circulation in Moldova
Working to build a more transparent relationship between advertisers and media outlets in Moldova, Eurasia Foundation (EF) launched the Developing Viable Media initiative with funding support from the Royal Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and USAID. EF awarded a grant to the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) to create an Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC), which will track and collect data on ownership, advertising revenues and circulation of media outlets across the country. Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia to Launch Youth Bank in Kazakhstan
On January 27th, Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia (EFCA) and the company GSM Kazakhstan/K'Cell signed a cooperation agreement to launch a joint project entitled, The Activ Youth Bank. The goal of the program is to involve youth in the development of society and to provide them with the skills needed to solve social problems. Within the project, a series of seminars and training sessions will be held on creating and developing youth banks as well as on leadership, volunteerism and organizational and financial management. In the first year, 20 grants are expected to be issued for the implementation of youth social programs and 40 grants are expected for the second year. Read more...
