Letter from the Chair and the President

Eurasia Foundation improves the lives of citizens by responding to locally articulated needs and ideas. We support the work of the region’s leading citizens and believe that governments grow stronger when citizens become stakeholders.

The Foundation continues to evolve from a single international foundation with multiple field offices to a network of affiliated, locally registered and operated organizations. Today, the Eurasia Foundation Network consists of four local foundations in partnership with the U.S. foundation, rooting 15 years of experience and social capital into the regional landscape, providing local governance, indigenous staff and an outlet for local philanthropy to extend the reach of Eurasia’s leading social entrepreneurs as they take an active role in their own civic and economic prosperity.

There has been a steady decline in international funding directed toward the region from U.S. donors—less than 10% of private cross-border giving in 2006 went to East Europe and Eurasia, according to the Foundation Center’s International Grantmaking Update. When coupled with crises elsewhere in the world clamoring for attention, this decline in funding requires the Foundation, our partners and beneficiaries to work even harder to be heard above the fray. We are actively promoting EF’s good work to supporters here in Washington, DC and in the capitals of Europe and Eurasia to continue our programs and assure the longevity of our affiliate organizations.

We remain convinced that the mission and vision of Eurasia Foundation are as worthy and vibrant today as they were in 1993 and that the promotion of civil society, public policy reform and private enterprise continue to be instrumental to the economic and social development of the Eurasia region. We eagerly anticipate the new direction the Foundation is taking and welcome the challenges that are to come.
