Jan Kalicki joined Chevron Corporation as Counselor for International Strategy in 2001.In this capacity, he acts as advisor to Chevron's Chairman, Vice Chairman, and other senior executives on regional strategies, international business opportunities and negotiations, and government relations.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Kalicki served in the Clinton Administration as Counselor to the U.S. Department of Commerce and as the White House's Ombudsman for Energy and Commercial Relations with the New Independent States.
Mr. Kalicki comes from an extensive background in the government, financial, and academic worlds.In government, he previously served as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer (1972-74), a member of the State Department's Policy Planning Staff under Secretaries Kissinger and Vance (1974-77), and Chief Foreign Policy Advisor to Senator Edward M. Kennedy (1977-84).
In finance, he served as Vice President (1984-88) and then Senior Vice President (1988-93) at Lehman Brothers in New York, where he developed the firm's investment banking businesses in the former Soviet Union and the Middle East.In academia, he was appointed Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and has taught at LSE, Harvard, Georgetown, Princeton, as well as at Brown University, where he also served as Executive Director of the Center for Foreign Policy Development and as Assistant to the President (1985-88).
Mr. Kalicki has authored a book and numerous publications on China, Russia, international energy and U.S. foreign, national security and international economic policies. He is editor (with Eugene Lawson) of Russian-Eurasian Renaissance, published in 2003 by the Wilson Center Press and Stanford University Press, and is editor (with David Goldwyn) of Energy and Security: Toward a New Foreign Policy Strategy, published by the Wilson Center Press and Johns Hopkins University Press in 2005. He is a trustee of the World Affairs Council of Northern California and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, and the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
Mr. Kalicki was born in London, England in 1948.He earned his A.B. with honors from Columbia College in 1968 and his Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1971.He is married and has three sons.
